Factor in the cost of your vehicle, the cost of insurance, registration and licensing. Also your vehicle depreciates the more miles you drive it.

Plus right now gas prices are horrible. Here in America it is much cheaper to ride a bus. And people around the world use airplanes because it is much less time consuming.

We have a BART train that takes you to San Francisco, but that’s not really worth the money unless you want to avoid the traffic jams.

I live in Ohio and they do not have public transportation except for senior citizens in my area. Gas costs about $3.20 a gallon right now. They do have park and rides where people can meet to carpool together. I find it difficult to unwind from a days work sometimes if someone is with me. Its also difficult because I am a smoker. Ohio has a public ban where you can’t smoke on public property so the only way I can smoke at work is in my own vehicle. I drive 50 miles round trip to work and it costs about $100- $120 dollars right now for the week. If my employer had a place for us to smoke or I would quit it would be more feasible for me to catch a ride. Sounds like you really get a bad deal with the transportation over there. It should cost less since you are not using as much fuel and vehicles and doing the environment a favor. That really doesn’t make sense. It should be cheaper.

There is no public transport from the village i live in to the village i work in(10) miles away.Also as a trucker i have all my bags,food etc for the week to take so a bike is out of the question so i have no alternative but to go by car(a waste of money as it sits in the yard all week while i am away!)I also leave at 4 in the morning so even if there was a bus or train it would not be running at that time in the morning!

here in the states we are too rich,too lazy and the bus (public transport in most areas is for the POOR! we will not use it until cars ar so expensive and inconvient as to force its usage-look at your own posting,if i read it right it was 60 -70 pounds to go somewhere (please forgive my lack of knowledge on your country)? that would be 130 us dollars which would be 33 gallons of gas and 10 left to park-so in my honda civic i could drive to san francisco,calif from my home in tacoma washington and back and pay to park (900 us miles!) and have enough left for a 99cent double cheese burger ! so until gas (PETROL) and urban access is priced out of middle class reach public transport in the us is a non-issue

labour have seriously undermined public transport. where I live the public transport on sundays and bank holidays are once every hour and a half making it vertually inpossable to work on these days and they double the fares.its better for me now I’ve passed my driving test and got a car. If the goverment made public transport a higher priority and drasticly inprove it for the better people may start using it more.

“Saver return” ticket from Ipswich Stn to London Liverpool St Stn costs £30 (£20 with railcard*). If you’re going early morning/late night, then you don’t need to worry about reserving a seat.

If you’re going to use the tubes or busses in London, consider buying an “oyster card” at Liverpool St (from the ticket office), they cost £3, and half the cost of all journeys on the tubes and busses (mine payed for itself in 2 journeys – any tube journey you take near Liverpool St will cost you £4 without one, £2 with – there are no peak-time prices on the tube). They don’t ask for any details, you give them £3 and the money you want to put on it, and they give you a card.

I do do use it, that route in fact (return journey – look for felixstowe or Norwich on the departure board).

*Railcards cost £20 per annum, and are only if you can prove yourself eligible, they also require proof of ID and a passport photo, but you can buy them at the Ips Stn ticket office.
