If it is on mainland Europe, send me an email and I can arrange to transport it by road to any address in Europe, for a sensible price.

I WOULDN’T PUT IT IN THE LUGGAGE IN CASE IT GETS LOST OR DAMAGED. I WOULD TAKE IT ON AS HANDLUGGAGE – BUY ONE OF THOSE SUIT CARRIERS THAT FOLD IN TWO – YOU SHOULD BE OK WITH THAT.

I just got married in mexico and took the dress in the cabin with a portable suit bag (not sure if that’s the name). The girls at the store recommended the “bag” instead of the box, as the dress was already ironed. They just made sure it was folded in a way that it wouldn’t get any marks and the staff at the airline was very happy to hang it in the 1st class closet (even if you’re traveling in tourist class, as soon as they know its a wedding dress they’ll be very helpful). When you reach your destination make sure you unfold it some hours before the wedding (one night would be good) and it would look as if it comes right from the store. Congratulations on your wedding!!! Enjoy it

i put mine in a space bag, however if it needs to be ironed or pressed make sure you have a service near where you will be or in the hotel (make sure your dress can be handled by a cleaner) if it is a temperamental material then some of the other ideas are good as well.
you can ask a seamstress or a dry cleaning place what they would do normally they are really good about answering questions like that, and that way you would get the best advice for whatever your dresses material is.

First of all, remember there are no guarantees about checking in luggage!
Last year I got married abroad and worried about transporting my wedding dress as well. This is what I did:
I put the dress in a heavy gauge garment bag. At the check-in counter I told them that it was my wedding dress and I MUST bring it on the plane. Because this is a very special event and they could sense my excitement, they allowed it. When I boarded the plane, I told the flight attendents what it was and they hung it up for me in the first class closet. At the end of the flight, I asked for it back and it was returned to me with no problem.
This method doesn’t let you hold on to it while you’re on the plane, but at least you don’t have to worry about baggage handlers getting a hold of it and accidentally ripping or dirtying or otherwise ruining your dress.

Make sure you take out extra insurance to cover the dress in transit (most insurances will not cover unless you specifically ask). Fold or roll the dress inside acid free tissue paper (rolling often better). Try to pack it so that it cannot move within the box to stay crease-free. Once it’s with the baggage people there’s nothing much you can do but bear in mind that luggage very rarely goes missing. Even if it does, it is usually found within a few hours. If there are any creases in the dress when it arrives, hang it up in a steamy bathroom (run the shower on hottest against the wall) and the creases will fall out (I learned this from a friend and it’s been eternally useful when travelling).
Good luck and enjoy your wedding.
